Where there is enough fall, a gravity drain to daylight beats a pump: nothing to power, nothing to fail. Where water is arriving from outside, an exterior drain and membrane stop it earlier. Where the cause is a downspout or a slope, neither is needed. A pump is the right answer when the water is below the level it can be drained away at.

That is the middle case, and it is the one where the answer is genuinely per-lot: some streets here have the fall for a gravity line and some do not. Ask a firm proposing a pump to say where a gravity run would have gone and why it was ruled out. A firm that has an answer has surveyed the site.
The reasoning behind that
A gravity drain to daylight is the first alternative and the best one when the site allows it. A pipe that falls continuously to a lower point on the property removes water with no electricity, no moving parts and no maintenance beyond keeping the outlet clear. It requires somewhere lower to exist.
Exterior interception is the second. A footing drain and a wall membrane stop water before it reaches the structure, so there is nothing inside to pump. It costs excavation and it is not available where the outside of the wall is built over.
Correcting the cause is the third and it is free by comparison. Downspouts discharging at the wall and ground sloping toward the house are the two most common reasons a basement is wet, and neither is solved by a pump.
A pump remains the correct answer in one situation: water arriving at or below slab level with nowhere lower to send it by gravity. That is a real and common situation, and in it a pump is not a compromise.
